Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists have an advanced understanding of body mobility and how to restore that mobility and strength as a result of illness or disease, or sport, work and accident related injuries. They are skilled in the assessment and management of a broad range of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. They begin their work with an orthopaedic musculoskeletal examination to determine an injury diagnosis. They perform an orthopaedic physical examination assessing your medical history, joint range of motion, joint stability, joint arthrokinematics, length tension relationships in muscles, posture, alignment, flexibility, strength and stability in the clinical sense. This medical focus takes into account the factors necessary to preventable injuries and diseases like chronic back and neck pain and arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many others. They then perform a functional movement screen which is a biomechanical examination of the musculoskeletal system looking more closely at the integration of movement and function.
An Advanced Manual Physiotherapist uses their palpation skills to determine the inter-segmental movements of the spinal facet joints and the movements of peripheral joints and in so doing they are able to determine which soft tissue structure (muscles, ligaments, tendons) may restricted and in which direction this restriction is presenting itself. Various manual joint and soft tissue techniques are utilized to release the articular and myofascial restrictions and restore mobility in the joints of the hip, knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, ribs and spine. Manual Physiotherapists will also evaluate your biomechanical and functional mechanics and this information will confirm and consolidate their palpation findings and together formulate a physiotherapy diagnosis.
